Seasons and Weather

Overview

Yellowstone National Park is truly a four-season destination. Summer is high season here, with warmer weather, active wildlife, and camping or hiking drawing most visitors to the park in June, July, and August. However, Yellowstone offers fun-filled activities and breathtaking views year-round. Technically the shoulder season, spring and fall both hold plenty of fun for adventurous travelers who don’t mind rolling the dice on unpredictable weather, which could include snow, sun, rain, or wind all in one day.

If you really want a stunning Yellowstone experience, visit in the snowy winter. Yes, you’ll encounter limited services in the park and gateway communities, but with low visitation and high adventure at this time of year, it’s well worth the trip. Even though many park roads close for the winter, you can still find year-round access via snow coaches, cross-country skis, and snowmobiles.
