The Seven Wonders of Yellowstone National Park

Published by:

Embark on a journey through the mesmerizing wonders of Yellowstone, where nature unfolds its marvels at every turn. From wildlife and wildflowers to geothermal features and rock formations to gushing geysers and mesmerizing waterfalls, the wonders never cease to amaze. Naming the top seven landmarks of Yellowstone is a challenging feat; however, they will not leave you disappointed.

7. Lamar Valley

Visitors to Lamar Valley are treated to expansive views of rolling meadows, the winding Lamar River, and a backdrop of majestic mountains. What makes Lamar Valley particularly special is the opportunity to witness a variety of wildlife, including bison, elk, wolves, grizzly bears, and more. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers flock to Lamar Valley for its unique combination of natural beauty and the chance to observe Yellowstone's diverse fauna.

6. Yellowstone Lake

Immerse yourself in the tranquility of Yellowstone Lake, the continent's largest high-elevation lake. Stretching 14 miles wide and 20 miles long, this frigid waterbody remains at an average temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. While a dip may be chilly, a paddle along its shores promises a scenic adventure.

5. Tower Fall

Witness the spectacle of Tower Fall, a 132-foot plunge framed by towering stone columns. Though not the tallest waterfall in the park, its unique geology and impressive free fall make it a captivating monument.

4. Mammoth Hot Springs

Marvel at the surreal beauty of Mammoth Hot Springs, where cascading travertine tiers resemble a frozen waterfall or a whimsical creation from Dr. Seuss. Mammoth Hot Springs is a geothermal wonder known for the stunning terraces of travertine. The hot springs at Mammoth are part of the larger Yellowstone Caldera—one of the largest active volcanic systems in the world. Wander the boardwalks and let your imagination run wild as you take in the breathtaking terraces.

3. Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Stand in awe before the timeless beauty of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. Admire the vivid colors and dramatic rock formations that have inspired generations of artists. Whether viewing the thundering Upper Falls or the majestic 308-foot Lower Falls, the Canyon continues to strike a classic pose that captivates all who gaze upon it.

2. Grand Prismatic Spring

The spreading rainbow of colors that stretches from the center of Grand Prismatic Spring is the result of thermophiles. These heat-loving algae and bacteria thrive in specific temperature rings that range out from almost 200 degrees Fahrenheit at the center. You can walk right above the surface on the boardwalk, getting an up-close look at its steaming surface or you can hike up to the overlook to get a high-flying, panoramic view of this natural masterpiece.

1. Old Faithful

Yellowstone National Park’s most famous geyser, Old Faithful, is named after its predictable eruptions approximately every 90 minutes. Reaching heights of 100 to 185 feet, the geyser's reliability has made it a popular attraction and tourist hot spot. Arrive early enough to find a prime viewing spot on the boardwalk or, for a truly breathtaking perspective, head to Observation Point for a bird's-eye view of the 100-foot-plus plume.

Explore the seven wonders of Yellowstone—and plenty more—on your visit to Yellowstone National Park. When you’re ready to flesh out your itinerary, find all the trip recommendations and hot spots that deserve a stop here at Yellowstone Country.
