48 Hours in Cody, Wyoming

If you’re looking for the perfect blend of Western history, small-town charm, and easy access to Yellowstone, Cody, Wyoming delivers in a big way. This two-day itinerary gives you just enough time to soak in the culture, explore iconic landscapes, and still leave room to slow down and enjoy it all.

Day 1: Settle In + Step Into the West

Start your trip by checking into The Chamberlin Inn, a quiet, historic boutique hotel tucked right in downtown Cody. It’s the kind of place that immediately sets the tone—cozy, character-filled, and effortlessly Western.

Once you’re settled, head over to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Plan to spend at least 2–3 hours here—it’s not your average museum. With five museums under one roof, you’ll dive into everything from Western art to Native American history and the life of Buffalo Bill himself. Even if you’re not a “museum person,” this one hits differently.

As the afternoon winds down, make your way to The Blanca Tatanka for dinner. Expect elevated Western flavors in a laid-back setting—the perfect refuel after a full afternoon of exploring.

Wrap up your night with drinks at the Irma Hotel, one of Cody’s most iconic spots. Originally built by Buffalo Bill, the bar still carries that old-school charm. It’s the kind of place where you can sit back, sip something strong, and feel like you’ve stepped into another era.

Day 2: Scenic Drives, Geothermal Wonders & Yellowstone’s Quiet Side

Ease into your morning with coffee and breakfast at Sitti’s Table, a local favorite known for its warm atmosphere and solid start to the day.

Then it’s time to hit the road.

Drive west along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, one of the most underrated routes into Yellowstone. The landscape shifts quickly—from red rock canyons to wide-open vistas—setting the stage for what’s ahead.

Once inside Yellowstone, focus on a few key stops that pack a punch without overwhelming your day:

Fishing Bridge – a classic Yellowstone viewpoint with sweeping water views

Yellowstone Lake – expansive, peaceful, and often overlooked

West Thumb Geyser Basin – where geothermal features meet the lake’s edge in a surreal way

After a full day of exploring, head back toward Cody and wind things down your way. Grab a casual drink at Pat’s Brew House or opt for something quieter—a sunset stroll along the Shoshone River, where the light hits just right and everything slows down.
